Teaching

My teaching interests relate very much to my research interests (see “Research”). A brief list of topics: New Testament (any and all topics relating to this collection of texts). Jewish Studies and Hebrew Bible: the ancient synagogue, Jewish history from the Persian period to Late Antiquity. Archaeology and inscriptions: synagogue archaeology. Jewish/Christian relations and Christian identity formation (including aspects of Graeco-Roman society and religion) from the first century to Late Antiquity. I also seek to engage historical topics hermeneutically in terms of the impact of the past on the present, and the present on our perception of the past. (The past isn't what it once was and the future escapes the present; in between lies history).
